Vascular Surgery

St. Elizabeth Dearborn vascular surgeons specialize in the evaluation and treatment of abnormal arteries and veins in both the peripheral vascular and cerebrovascular system. Our team of experienced and caring professionals will work closely with your primary care or referring physician from diagnosis through recovery.

Peripheral Vascular Disease:

Similar to cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the veins and arteries. And while PAD is most commonly associated with legs, it can also affect the arms, stomach, intestine, and kidneys.

Conditions we treat:

  • abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • aortoiliac disease
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • arm artery disease
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • peripheral aneurysm
  • reno vascular disease
  • thoracic aortic aneurysm
  • thoracic outlet syndrome
  • varicose veins
  • venous insufficiency

*We also perform fistula placement surgery.

Cerebrovascular Disease:

The carotid arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to the brain. One type of cerebrovascular disease is a narrowing of these arteries. If this narrowing becomes severe, it may cause a stroke.

Conditions we treat:

  • carotid stenosis
  • stroke

Minimally Invasive Techniques:

Whenever possible, our surgeons use laparoscopic surgery. It’s an alternative to traditional "open"-surgery in which a large incision must be made. Our surgeons use laparoscopic surgery to make incisions only millimeters in size to create a passageway for special surgical instruments and a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a fiber-optic instrument that is inserted in the body. This device transmits images from within the body to a video monitor, allowing the surgeon to see the operative area on the screen.

Advantages to the minimally invasive approach include:

  • less discomfort
  • a shorter hospital stay
  • quicker recovery
  • reduced rate of infection
  • minimal scarring
